The wondrous thing about children is their affinity to learn, so we are intent on teaching them! One of HSSET’s many goals is to educate the youth of Southeast Texas on compassion and empathy towards all living creatures, specifically companion animals. Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another, and feeling with the heart of another. Empathy is the key to a compassionate and thriving civilization.
This summer we were excited to share these lessons with the kids at Buckner Children’s Village in Beaumont Texas. Through interactive lessons, the children learned how to care for companion animals, how to approach and care for a stray animals, what service dogs do for people, and most importantly how and why to treat every living thing with empathy. It was extraordinary to watch children grow in their understanding of animals and their needs. It did not take them long to see the connection between their own needs and companion animal’s needs. After a week long Critter Camp, a wonderful group of children learned the truly inspiring lesson of treating each other and companion animals with compassion and empathy!
